Common Aluminium Sheet Metal Gauges

There are several different gauge systems used today with specific gauge designations used for specific metal types.
Common aluminium sheet metal gauges. Thus a 10 gauge steel sheet which has a thickness of 0 1345 inches will weigh. Sheet metal thickness gauges for steel are based on a weight of 41 82 pounds per square foot per inch of thickness. Aluminum is a general purpose alloy commonly used in extrusions and is also available in sheet metal. This is known as the manufacturers standard gage for sheet steel.
However it is not recommended for sheet metal work because it tends to crack on the outside radii once it passes its yield and therefore requires a much larger radii to be able to bend properly. 1 2893 7 3 2812 7 1 2 2576 6 5 2656 6 7 3 2391 6 1 2294 5 8 2500 6 4 4 2242 5 7 2043 5 2 2344 6 0 5 2092 5 3 1819 4 6 2187 5 6 6 1943 4 9 1620 4 1 2031 5 2 7 1793 4 6 1443 3 7 1875 4 8 8 1644 4 2 1285 3 3 1719 4 4 9 1495 3 8 1144 2 9 1562 4 0. For example in one gauge system 18 gauge steel measures 0 0478 inches thick but 18 gauge aluminum is 0 0403 inches thick. 6061 aluminum is also very easy to machine.
Theoretically all aluminium sheets metals can be made into the five thickness ranges above but some are usually made into thin sheets and others thicker sheets. The gauge number 18 holds no relevance to the actual measurements. Super thick sheets mm. Gauge sheet steel.
