Common Sheet Metal Thickness

A sheet metal gauge sometimes spelled gage indicates the standard thickness of sheet.

The gauge number 18 holds no relevance to the actual measurements. The manufacturers standard gage provides the thicknesses for standard steel galvanized steel and stainless steel. This measurement is for around duct smaller than 12 inches in diameter and a rectangular section no bigger than 8 inches.
